Gain Weight Fast

Smoking And Weight Gain

In the quit smoking procedure if the urge to smoke can be resisted for about five minutes, it often passes. He offers several tactics to try during those five minutes. In one, you take a deep breath, hold it a moment, and exhale as if taking a first drag on a cigarette. Part of the satisfaction from smoking, he says, comes not from the nicotine but from the body's reaction to a deep breath. Another approach: Get up and move around during those five minutes. That helps the urge pass, increases energy levels and, he says, uses the calories that would have been burned in response to nicotine stimulation.

Finally, cut yourself some slack. Up to 70 percent of smokers make one or two attempts to quit before they succeed. And although health professionals rarely endorse gain weight fast, 5 or 10 extra pounds are usually not significant from a health point of view, and it's certainly less risky than continuing to smoke. In fact, do you know how much weight some experts say you'd have to gain to affect your health risks as much as continuing to smoke does?

Tidyman's Lamphier, a category manager at Supervalu's J. Jones division in Champaign, Ill agreed. He thinks it's adding to the category. There are the die-hards who have to have the regular-type foods, and then you've got people between who buy both they're buying what they normally would a products. He said what's going on in salty snacks is an example of an overall grocery trend: Anything designated light, reduced or better for your health is a growth category.

Like other retailers, he doesn't see any cannibalization in the category. He believes consumers might be buying the traditional item in addition to the low-fat or low-salt item. He said Buehler uses a special rack to merchandise Nabisco products that fall under the manufacturer's wellness program. That's where they have their reduced-fat and low-fat salty snacks, including Snackwell's.

Similarly, Buehler also displays a special Frito-Lay merchandising rack for its products. Craig's experience has been that it's best to place these racks in or around the salty snack aisle. It used to be that retailers put all the low-calorie and diet foods in a diet section. But because of the proliferation of all these reduced items -- from the Healthy Choice people all the way to the reduced potato chips -- these items are in line with product lines.

However, in the case of salty snacks at Camellia, the low-salt products are a separate 4-foot section within in the aisle. Of course, there are at least two schools of thought on merchandising the reduced snacks. For instance, Boogaarts' Chiefelbein said he merchandises his low-fat chips next to his regular chips, instead of breaking them out into a different section.

While Tidyman's has a natural food section, the reduced snacks are not merchandise within this department is integrated within the snack aisle.
